Yes, no antibiotics so if you couldn't fight off an infection naturally, you were a goner. My grandmother died of tuberculosis in the 1940's (in her twenties).
But nearly everyone in the collection of pictures made it through the Spanish Flu of 1918-1920 (which probably / actually originated on a farm in Kansas). -
