It's just not that they fell for it, they reveled in it. Since there is a real dearth of actual "hate crimes" the left when the chance arises, grabs the "hate crime" like a drowning man holds on to a life preserver. Whether it was Smollett who hung a noose around his neck or the black NASCAR driver who had half the FBI investigate the garage door rope, they want to believe so bad that they just turn off their brains and turn on the feelz. I remember when this story broke and none of it made any sense. Even the Chicago cops were gagging on this story. When the story fell apart, the leftard MSM just shit canned it down the memory hole and waited for the next big hate crime, like Rittenhouse.
