I've actually been following this strike via the Breaking Points podcast. Some interesting nuance.
This in a lot of a ways was the old-guard at JD having the backs of the new hires. As I recall there were 3 tiers of employees. The newest employees were being offered pennies on the dollar and no pension. The old-guard could have easily said tough shit kid, you on your own.
Allegedly the execs at JD were implementing these changes despite records profits.
The other interesting thing that isn't mentioned here is the employees actually REJECTED this 2nd offer. However there is a delegate system (I don't understand how it works) that ratified the 2nd contract offer despite losing a majority of votes. They were still ready to walk, for more.
Funny story, when the blue collar workers walked, they put the white collar workers on the plant floor. The first morning by 830a the plant had to call paramedics due to injury on the plant floor.
Despite my long-held disdain for unions, I find myself moving left on this issue. it doesn't sit well with me the $4 Trillion print/inflation is causing a greater chasm between the haves, and have nots. JD is clearly a winner in the inflation game. Plus the impetus to move factory jerbs overseas? Yeah, fuck you BIG Business/BIG Finance. (Not to be confused with my love of small business)
I don't like arbitrary, govt intervention in markets, however if this income disparity isn't figured out soon history will repeat itself circa 1790 France. heads will roll.

This is very common with companies hoping to do business in China. So much so it's become a major issue in the tech and defense sectors. The CCP strait up orchestrates those deals with US companies where they control the company and take the IP in exchange for access to the China market.

You know who isn't thrilled? The dems and the US Chamber of Commerce. Labor shortages are good for labor. In February 2020, the American middle class was achieving record increases in real wages. That was good news for American labor and bad news for the anti-Trumpers so they loved American labor so much, they destroyed millions of jobs and got Cho Bai Den theoretically elected. First thing, start shutting down the US energy sector and opening the borders for millions of low cost workers to suppress American wages.

Ideally, labor and management have a moderate tension that works as a check and balance. Lately the corporatists have been overplaying their hand and the workers are striking back.
