The market will fix this real quick. There will be cards introduced that don’t do this, and MasterCard will lose their ass. Problem solved.
Unless people just go along with it like they are everything else. Eg, social media controlling their news, accepting controls over life due to COVID, etc.

Such as every other card that's been introduced in history? Nobody's forcing anybody to get this credit card. It's a product pitched at green conscious consumers and virtue signalers. Mastercard won't lose their ass because Mastercard will have plenty of traditional options as well. Their competition won't have this, though, so they might snag a tiny slice of market share away.
The part that makes me laugh the hardest is that it's somehow news that credit card processors track purchases. Uh, duh. How could they not? If you want to have a chat with a representative from your bank, get gas at a gas station, then drive to the gas station across the street and get gas there, too. Your phone will ring before you're finished. Or at least it would 20 years ago when I used to do this fairly regularly. Buying a lot of stuff in another state without warning your bank you were traveling first is almost a surefire call, too. But nobody's tracking purchases...
Mastercard partnered with some firm that assigns a carbon score to consumer goods purchases (I'm sure in a "really scientific way") that have been being tracked since the inception of the credit card so that rich people can voluntarily be constrained to some total and sleep better at night.
Good example of why the future is either crypto or authoritarian dystopia. Mastercard and Visa and many other major banks already shutdown payment processing and banking for open wrongthinkers. Next step is obviously going after the wrongthinkees:

I’m still not completely sold on crypto … but the middle finger to governments is a really compelling use case
