That said, Rick, took over a program that was still nationally relevant and managed 1 Pac title in 4 tries. Pete took over a program that had been a laughing stock for a decade and a half and won 2 Pac titles in 6 tries.

Except they are different. No other program has won six national titles in the short 11 year span that Saban and Bama have. And that's to say nothing of the fact that they've done so in what is a much more competitive college football landscape that what other dominant runs by programs were featured in. They're far and away the best program of all time, and this most recent run is far and away the most impressive span. It's not really that close.Canadawg said:

What was his yards per pass attempt? Total TDs? Again, Rick had a bad year, with no opportunity to improve after. And his bad year was as good as any year Lambo, Sark or Lake has (or will) have. (Yes, Lambo won 9 games one year with the one of the best players in UW history, and Rick pushed in his shit in the Bowl Game.) Petersen was a good coach who quit. Neu was a good coach who was fired. And Neu never blew a game against Arizona by having no idea how to run out the clock with a lead. The trending down narrative is incomplete, and in reality, not technically gifted.DerekJohnson said:

But...grandpa Sankey could see that it's a stretch to call him a "good" coach. He was solid on the sidelines but his roster construction, recruiting, and player development were all piss poor. The trending down narrative was not a narrative at all. It was plain for all to see. The team was soft as fuck, ran a disgusting, boring offense, and had little talent incoming especially on the lines. RN was not going to be better than Sarkisian long term. -

Just catching up here.
Sure. In the make-believe world in which six-ring Nick magically reappears in East Lansing, he’d probably build a build a monster there. But living legends don’t take the MSU job. The baked-in institutional advantages at Bama are enormous. And sure, Saban deserves great credit for elevating them above the other blue bloods. But Bama has always been a blue blood.dnc said:Yes because Nick Saban was flashing six natty rings when he was at Michigan State. He could turn them in to a monster now if he wanted to.
I agree. Ten wins in year three sounds about right. Again, in the fantastical scenario where Saban takes his talents (and his six rings) to Corvallis. But an isolated 10-win season at OSU or WSU isn’t “dominat[ing] the conference,” which is the claim I was reacting to.RoadDawg55 said:That was so long ago.
