I tried to assess the team unit by unit and find some positives last night. I failed. I think the DBs were pretty solid. The underneath middle of the defense was a gaping hole all night, but the interior DL were oenetrating against the run and slowing down running backs enough for the linebackers to make tackles for short gains or making tackles themselves. So, I think the DT rotation played pretty well too.
The OLBs were a non factor for the most part. They got uofield too far on a ton of pass plays and the middle was again wide open for the taking by the QB. The ILBs were nowhere to be seen or were too slow to make the stop when he did run.
What the fuck is wrong with UW special teams? When UW kicked off they caught it in the endzone, but when he came out there wasn't a single UW coverage guy inside the 25 and they easily brought it out part the 25. On UW returns, by contrast, the ball would be caught and half if Montana's coverage unit was already bearing down on him.
There's something seriously wrong and it goes beyond scheme. UW should be embarrassing lesser teams on kicks through sheer athleticism advantage, but look listless and slow. The team is not motivated and not playing hard.
