Found this about UW recruiting back in the James era.
Notable: emphasis on QB mobility. Does the player project as a Soph starter on a Pac-10 championship team. No pussies need apply.
From Chris Tormey, then then recruiting cordinator: "We needed players on defense to make plays in space, and you needed players to put stress on the defense in the passing game. We knew we wanted a mobile quarterback. You see some of the outstanding athletes we had in that group, and a lot of that was based on Coach James’ direction on the kind of athletes we were looking for.”
Gary Pinkel: Instead of evaluating a player’s speed on film or relying solely on unverified sprint times, the UW coaches adopted a looked to a player’s vertical jump. Take " similar-sized people, and let’s look at and analyze guys that run a 4.5 — what do they generally vertical jump?”
Tormey; Speed, speed, speed: “For each position group, we had a really extensive evaluation sheet that we used for each player we recruited. Each player would get three ratings — a high school coach rating, a UW coach rating and a height-weight-speed rating by position. We had different charts. If we were recruiting a DB, a 4.4 40 would be a 1, 4.5 would be a 2, and so on.”
Coaches were instructed to answer nine questions before recruiting a player.
1. Can he be a great college player?
2. Can he be a regular as a sophomore on a championship team?
3. Does he have head-hunter-type toughness? (Hi Asa Turner)
4. Does he come early and stay late to improve?
5. How does he accept harsh criticism?
6. What would be his reaction to a radical change in position?
7. Is he a good citizen? A leader?
8. Is he dying to be a great football player?
9. Has he had a medical problem that could prevent him from being a great player?
Pinkel: What the system did wasn’t perfect, but it was very, very thorough. We as a staff would vote on a player, and it was tedious...those evaluations were everything. Was it great every year? No, but I think through time that system is still one that allows you to make sure that you don’t make mistakes.
