Movie Review: Bullit 1968

This movie has survived into the internet era based on a legendary car chase that I am sure even kids have googled at some point. I was a kid myself in 1968. I long ago put 60's movies into the lock box after having seen them billions of times. I find myself unlocking the box these days

Watched Bullit in its entirety last night in full HD. It is more than a car chase although it is epic and ends with the bad guys literally dying in a fire, HH wheelhouse

It is also a time capsule of the 60's and how life was because this was a Hollywood special showing the latest and greatest in American life in San Francisco without the hippies. Which means it is about third world level compared to today. The high tech was a phone photo fax machine that the guys stood around in wonder. Big healthcare doctor worship too with the head surgeon a Black man. We? were attempting to integrate entertainment even in those ancient racist times.

Jaqueline Bisset wandering around the apartment half naked. Steve McQueen being the strong silent detective. He was playing the same Zodiac detective that Dirty Harry was modeled after.

Ultimately it is a formulaic mob thriller with the evil rich white Senator pulling the strings. The ending is at the airport running between 727s because jet travel was still new and cool and the 747 wasn't even born quite yet.

The car chase is the middle of the movie and has no reason other than its a car chase. Hollywood could have retired car chases after this one.

Anyway kids from 8 to 80 can enjoy this look back to a simpler time where you had to use a pay phone.

She wanted to be part of Steve's life dammit. Then she saw a murder scene and told him she didn't think she could be with him since he saw that shit all the time. Women - am I right?

I am also watching Lonesome Dove from 1989 and I thought Robert Duval looked old in 1989. Then he's a cabbie in Bullitt and I thought Robert Duval looked old in 1968. I bet he came out of the womb looking old

The car chase scene has never been topped. All those other action flicks with car chase scenes can fuck off.

If you see it in a theater the in car shots going over the hills makes your stomach jump

    Pretty cool

Saw it at the drive-in with my mom and step dad and five brothers when I was a kid. Only thing I even remembered from the movie until I watched it again about 10 years ago was the car chase.

If you know the lay-out of SF the "chase" is geographically impossible.

Yes. Ronin car chase is insane
It's a car chase thinly disguised as a really good movie.

You wanna take the gloves off, Race!?

Seriously, though, I started my honeymoon in Nice because of Ronin. That, and it was way cheaper to fly into than anywhere in Italy. Cool fucking city! We spent our whole time there in the old city, where the car chase was filmed.

I spent three days in Arles and hung out at night at this cafe across the street from the Coliseum. That open window on the left, I was sitting at a table when a nearby table starting bantering in Italian to a woman with long hair standing in that window. Someone yelled "Rapunzel!" and everybody broke up laughing. Anyway, that was the window where Gregor made his phone call demanding the conditions for returning the case. It would have been filmed a year or two after I was there.

I went for a long walk through Arles and out into the countryside. I walked into a clearing -- and realized that it was a real bonafide gypsy camp. I had seen gypsies in Amboise but walking right through one of their camps -- wearing a Chicago Bulls t-shirt, was a different experience for young Stalin. They were all looking at me with disbelief.

Not 1968 (1971 and 1974) but both great car chase scene movies.
