It's interesting. When you work in my area, you come to look down upon, and write-off, the retail investor. It's the unwashed masses, the masses from which some smart guy who doesn't understand anything wants the CEO to resign, or the company to sell of this or that division, or to stop mining near some river, or whatever.
When Blackrock calls, you take the call and you listen. When Joe Dipshit calls, you roll your eyes and be polite.
The only real difference between Joe and Blackrock is aggregation ... aggregation of money and thus of shares and thus of power and influence.
We may have opened a Pandora's box here: we are seeing that same aggregation here, at least as it relates to affecting the market. They'll never get together and appoint a leader and come up with a policy or anything. That way, the traditional aggregators will still hold @Swaye . But in terms of driving aggregated market behavior, this is the answer to institutional money. the fucking internet.
In some ways, I'm surprised it took this long for something like this to happen.
