Lynyrd Skynrd Documentary

It’s called If I Leave Here Tomorrow. For some reason I watched Lynyrd Skynrd at the Oakland Coliseum in 77 on YouTube last night. It was crazy how many girls were into it.

Anyone else seen it? What’s the consensus on Lynyrd Skynrd?

Cry in your beer, red neck schlock.

Gimme three steps is pretty funny, and Ooh that smell and Mr Saturday night special are pretty decent. I cant listen to the rest.

My opinion is the exception, here and pretty much anywhere else where classic rock is popular.

They are probably in the top 10 of American rock bands.

Gimme Back My Bullets is going to get some play after Inauguration Day.

Skynrd and AC/DC were the only two bands to listen to in 79/80. Nothing else mattered.

My shitty little band in college played free bird. The 90s chicks dug it.

Southern rock was huge and LS rose to the top of that heap. And let's be real, dying in a plane crash helps future sales

The 70's into the early 80's was a time of softening the image of the south and music was one of the ways as they had hippies down there too not just old folks tyin white ropes

Look at movies of the time like Josey Wales or the Long Riders. The gray coat was a sympathetic figure. Take out slavery and a couple of long runs and the south wasn't all that bad was the theme. Just rebels against authority like the kids of the time

Not saying that was right and lord knows in 2020 it isn't. Just reporting the news

Their first two albums are terrific front to back. There’s a lot more to Skynyrd than Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama. They invented the 3 lead guitar sound which was unique and kicked serious ass.
Yep, the band had an interesting dynamic. If you haven’t seen the documentary, I recommend it.

I was listening to Stone Cold Steve Austin and Joey Diaz on a podcast and they were talking about the LS show in Oakland in 77 so I YouTubed that, then read about Lynyrd Skynrd for about an hour, then watched the Showtime doc. I still don’t know why, but it was very interesting and fun.

I have them as my number 1 American rock band but I’ll wait for someone to offer up the competition to see who I’m forgetting.

GOAT American band is thorny as there is no clear winner. Beach Boys probably had the greatest impact on the evolution of the genre.

I'm bias, but I think the Grateful Dead is huge on here as they represent Americana. They played, Rock, Blues, Jazz, Bluegrass, Country, etc.

Nash was from England, so CSN was only 2/3 American.

Like @alumni94 , the Grateful Dead are my all time favorite American rock group. But I can't consider them the "greatest" because at the end of the day, they are still a cult band, albeit the most important cult band that ever was.
