Hospitals are just like any other rental property, they have to maintain occupancy to make $$$. I bet the average heads in beds goal is North of 92%. The more cord wood the more they make!

I'd also bet that the total number of hospital beds available nationwide isn't what it was 20 years ago. I know in California the number of beds is down from what it was even 10 years ago despite an increase in the overall population of the state.

Lots of former hospital stays are now avoided with better treatment and an expectation of going home earlier. No more three days in the hospital for having a baby or a hip replacement.
