Where my Iowa Dawgs at?

chuckchuck Member, Swaye's Wigwam Posts: 11,067 Swaye's Wigwam
Chuck has been under some stress. My one and only son, age 21, got a promotion from Amazon he couldn't refuse, hopped in his Subaru and drove to Des Moines to live. He made it to Lincoln tonight.

This all happened really suddenly. He barely packed at all and has nothing but a fairly fat bank account. Starts work on 12/20. He'll be in a hotel or whatever he finds until able to find a long term rental. Doesn't know a single soul within 1000 miles.

So, I threw this out here for the hell of it. Theres always a chance someone will know or even live in the area and have some advice or interesting things to say about the area..good or bad. I dont expect a lot of good.

Anyways...back to hating life as a Husky fan. tyfys.

I used to have lots of kin in Des Moines. My mom was born there. They all left.

Yeah I tried to talk him out of it but he's a decisive, determined shit head. The only encouraging thing about it is that he's in the middle of what passes for a population center in the Midwest. At least there are a lot of young adults around so he should be able to find some sort of social life.

He expects to be there for a year. It's really easy to move around with Amazon so as of now his plan is to use it to see the cuntry. He just picked a really strange starting point.

I worked for Amazon. It is easy to see America going to their FCs. They have some many more now, enjoy while you can. Hard work, long hours.

Not the best time to be starting out most anywhere, I guess, so if things aren't going to be particularly fun in 'vid times, then living in cheaper Midwest probably has some merit. Kid can bank some $ and move somewhere more fun when things improve.

22 or so years ago I was in his shoes, but in Wichita, which is about the same size (87th biggest metropolitan area vs 94th), a little redder, a little less fun, and even cheaper to live than Des Moines. Even then, those were mostly fun times for me. Not so much anymore, but I'm too fucking retarded to LEAVE.

Kid sounds like self-starter; I expect he'll do great.

Congrats on your spawn being self sufficient. That’s a big time step.

I know people from Iowa. I’ve been to Iowa. For like a day. Kansas is my extended family. That’s all I got.

Thanks. He keeps trying and has had a couple of misfires but put himself in a good position on this one. The trip went smooth and he has a place lined up. He can't believe he hasn't fucked up something yet.

    Des Moines, cool fucking city,!!

Actually I’ve never been to Des Moines and I’ve only been to Iowa once. It was on a work trip to Omaha where we went across the river to hit a super depressing riverboat casino on the Missouri River where it seemed like you were going to bump your head on the crazy low ceilings (and I’m not @YellowSnow tall)... lost my ass at the tables and didn’t realize that i had to pay for my drinks (I had only gambled in Las Vegas prior to that). Fuck that casino...

I figure there must be some blue gill, pumkinseeds, and maybe even crappie in some ditch around there. So there's that. Or maybe he can do some musky fishing up north or hit lake Michigan for some steelheading.

He won't do any of that, but he should.

In the Midwest, a guy should be able to find bluegill, ditch pickles, pike, and carp pretty easy at least. He should be able to kill a monster deer pretty easy, too - are Amazon workers allowed to do that?

There's worse states than Iowa. Not a lot, but there are.
