One thing I realized about halfway through the first quarter. That was the first UW home gayme I watched live on TV since probably 1980. Have been at all the rest. Was kind of weird. (I know, I hate money)
Not sure which thread to throw this in but didn’t want to start another new one. Continuing my drunk thots on the game after watching the replay. Let’s beat that dead horse shall we?
Offense
- Batted balls at line, going to be a problem for a 6’ Morris so he needs to learn to avoid it. I counted at least 3
- 5 drops by the WR, two would have converted a 3rd down, two would have been TDs. That changes the general feeling of the game
- Multi TE sets dominated the game, and those fuckers blocked their asses off, reward them with passes
- No real shots beyond 10 yards, like, at all
- 5 big gainer runs to the left including two TDs, Kirkland and Ulumoo did work
- No sacks, no turnovers, good job by a Frehman in his first start
- 8-17 third down, most were 3rd and short or 3rd and medium, 2-2 on 4th
- Controlled the clock, long drives, 37 to 23 possession advantage
- 5 red zone trips but only two TD, continuing a bullshit trend the last two years, fix that shit!
- Goal to go and no push for TD, must be fixed
- Clearly defined stages of game for RB, McGrew, Kamari, Davis early and in the 3rd but then strictly Newton and Pleasant to finish, can’t be rigid like that
Defense
- Lack of rotation, no hockey shifts with DL and LB which has been a staple, why no Bandes/Ngalu/Heimuli/Calvert
- Slanting line and eager LB left holes open for chunk gains rushing, guys were guessing rather than sticking with assignments, can be fixed
- Fans hate it but Safeties stay back to prevent explosive plays and force long drives, no plays over 20 yards in the game and Beavers only finished 2 drives of 9
- Ulofoshio and Molden are everywhere
- ZTF causing a lot of havoc, stepped up huge for Latu
- Bowman washed out a lot on runs and Sirmon consumed by blockers easily
- 131 rushing yards on 2 drives, but just 36 on other 7, the run defense can be fixed quickly
- Jermar Jefferson is a great RB
- McDuffie saves td on reverse that Bowman read wrong and crashed hard on, just insane speed and instincts
- 4-12 on 3rd down conversions, that’s how you keep teams down
- 1-3 on 4th down conversion to get off the field
Special teams
- Terrible kick coverage, it was fixed last year but this shit was like 2018
- Missed FG that was a chip shot, again like 2018 after a Henry was nails last year, get it together
- Bad snaps by the true freshman in his first game, too juiced up and high but got it under control
- McDuffie made 6 open tacklers miss on 2 returns, he will be a difference maker on punts
Also, I don’t think there were any TFLs and there certainly weren’t any sacks.
Pretty sure OSU lead the country in TFLs last season and Rasheed Jr had 22.5 by himself along with 14 sacks. That’s super impressive by a really young line with three first time starters.
Also, all of the TEs blocked their asses off the entire game. Good first showing by Cato. Hopefully it continues with the receiving game.
