If the season isn't going to happen anyway, the play is to join the fake SEC superconference. Then the season's canceled in total, but you can still tell recruits that you're serious about football once football is allowed to be played again. There's zero risk to this plan and plenty of reward.
The way I see it, there's one of two scenarios that need to happen: Either everyone plays or nobody plays. If only a few conferences play, the other conferences will be dead, as every high level recruit in the country will abandon ship.
