The imminent libertarian surge is not a sure thing but it more than a hunch. In informal conversations, one hears the sentiment even from people I know to be fundamentally progressive and inclined to defer to whatever health officials say is responsible and necessary to mitigate the worst effects of coronavirus. It is possible both to support the shutdown and powerfully resent it — the draconian nature of the response, and the widespread perception that to voice skepticism of any aspect of its necessity is outside respectable bounds.

The governors could have avoided the forthcoming shit show by just being honest for a change.

"Look, this limitation on freedom of assembly has nothing to do with usurping the Bill of Rights. It's a health measure - we are asking you to voluntarily do the right thing here for a limited period of time then it will be back to normal as far as your Constitutional rights go".

That's ALL they had to say to defuse the situation. Reasonable people will say "Oh, OK....one for all, all for one".

Instead they took the my way or the highway approach.

Agree. I'd say I was surprised by their incompetence, but then I'd be lying.

But it's not that for about 2/3 of them and the whole West Coast. They have completely disregarded the premise that the Government is of the people, by the people and for the people. Which means that in the USA, the people control what the Government does, not the other way around.

And they've ignored that in spades for about 10 years now. This was the chance they were waiting for all those years. And now with the help of the media, the Karens, the Karls, the millions that simply scare easily and just the plain stupid corona bros , they will never relinquish the grip that they hold now. Even when things are allowed to "open back up". There will be restrictions hanging over head.

It's most glaring in California, where on the same day that the most influential owners of pro sports teams meet with the President, the mayor of LA announces that there will be no sports or concerts until 2021. And now you have California Congressbots proposing free crums for 18 months in exchange for allowing them to bankrupt 3/4 of the businesses out there.

Socialism is a real goal for them. And now that they have their opening, they aren't looking back and will attain their goals unless someone with a big gun stops them.

They could have just as easily kept slow rolling it and probably got there over time.
