Stalin at the Movies: Chinese movie called "Us and Them"

Provocative and moving film from Netflix. It lasts about 2 hours and 20 minutes so it requires patience. Like Husky football under Petersen, it's not for everyone. They could have knocked thirty minutes off of it and still have been okay. Very different sensibility to this movie. Makes you remember the times of your youth when you struggled financially and romantically. Very realistic depiction of a young man and woman who would otherwise be perfect for each other save for the fact that 20-year old guys are always immature and don't know yet what they want in life.

The acting is brilliant and the writing superb. Zhou Dungyu is brilliant in her facial expressions and delivering of lines. I guess she's known to billions of Chinese as an amazing actress. Well I'm sold.

I'm not sure if a 20-year old Stalin would have had the patience to sit through this kind of movie. But I watched it in two sittings and it was so different from American films. I think what is interesting about it is that it doesn't conclude with a fairytale ending where all the bad guys die and the man and woman sail off into the sunset happily ever after. It feels much truer to real life than that.

Stalin gives this two sickles up
