“The New York Times posted an article that is making the rounds across social media. The article claims that the rich actually pay less as a portion of their income in taxes than the poor and middle class.

That article is based on data from economists Gabriel Zucman and Emmanuel Saez, who have been openly campaigning for Elizabeth Warren and higher taxes on the wealthy. (In other words, they are biased.) They also have not released the data or methods for their claims, the claims did not pass through peer-review, apparently they simply emailed their results straight to the New York Times.

It should be noted that no other study has come to the conclusion that the US tax system is regressive. Economist Jason Furman, who was on Obama's Council of Economic Advisers, has noted that the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office figures show that, when taking all taxes into account, the US tax system is progressive (see below.)

Additionally, when you take into account transfer payments to the bottom 50%, the US tax system is very progressive (see second graph.)

Just because the NYT said the tax system favors the rich doesn't mean it's true. “
