The study examined the placentas of a small group of less than 30 nonsmoking mothers exposed to air pollution. Researchers found the soot particles accumulated on the side of the placenta facing the fetus.

They found that when pregnant women breathe in black carbon, caused by combustion of fossil fuels, such as coal or diesel, by vehicles, power plants and a range of other sources, the particles reach the placenta.
