    Vons and Safeway were competitors until the 1980s. Safeway was the national behemoth while Vons was purely a SoCal chain. During the 1980s, Safeway shrunk, selling off hundreds of stores to pay off a pile of debt. The company decided to pull out of Southern California altogether, selling its SoCal locations to Vons. Then in the 1990s, Safeway purchased Vons. They kept the Vons name in place because the brand was and is strong in Southern California

    On a side note , it is strange to see my local Publix employees on-line. I have been in that cashiers line many times.
    Publix is the shit. Wish we had them here.
    Publix is OK but nothing compares to the stores on the West Coast. Even Freddy's makes Publix look like chopped liver.
    Disagree generally speaking. Freddy's, QFC, Safeway, Albertsons are all meh. Not all Publix are created equal but they're generally better than that bunch.

    You get over the hill out in Walnut Creek and Moraga and any Safeway or Albertsons will be great, they are hit and miss on my side of the hill. But Berkeley Bowl if you like fresh produce is insane.

    Haggen's original management team back in the mid to late 80's were real assholes. Good stores though.

    Albertson guys just wanted freebies like tickets and screaming deals so they could divert product to Texas and Florida. Safeway guys did whatever Oakland HQ told them to do.
