9th Circuit rules in favor of Trump admin in 'sanctuary city' case

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday ruled in favor of the Trump administration's efforts to prioritize federal dollars for local policing to towns and cities that complied with certain immigration policies.

The ruling, a split 2-1 decision, said the Department of Justice (DOJ) was within its rights to withhold Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grants from sanctuary cities and states over their refusal to work with federal immigration enforcement authorities and instead prioritize agencies that focused on unauthorized immigration and agreed to give Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) access to jail records and immigrants in custody.

    Great news that the most liberal court in the land would make that decision. Doesn't bode well for El Monte.

    Actually losing COPS money is a huge deal for the cities and departments. Could seriously effect law enforcement if the liberalS double down on sanctuary BS.

    I tried to tell El Monte that a single District Court Judge's ruling wasn't the final word on all of this but being the legal expert he is on this topic he didn't listen.

    Tell us again how sanctuary laws are illegal, and unconstitutional? You’ve lost every step of the way so far but I’m sure you have a good argument. It’s like Orval Faubus all over again! Except you can’t win the argument in policy or law.


    And by "every step of the way" El Monte meant a single ruling by an Obama appointed District Court Judge.

The city of LA could lose $3 million annually.

    Today’s ruling is the first and only setback (minor as it is — the laws themselves remain fully intact) that I’m aware of.
