Have we discussed Dick Baird's comments re spring/players yet?
He was on with Softy re the QBs in the transfer portal. Said, among other things, that neither Sirmon nor Yankoff looked good enough in spring to be the backup. That's why Haener was getting reps.
Said our best-looking LB this spring has been Olefoshio. Said Sirmon and Tafisi will be good down the road, but that tells me they didn't look good enough right now. Matches what my eyes told me in the Spring Fling. Sirmon's not ready. I didn't focus as much on Tafisi. Think Wellington and Olefoshio start.
Thinks Lowe could really provide something at the Chico role. Seemed to like the OLBs, Tryon, Ngata and ZTF.
Asked to name the superstar talent that nobody was really talking about a la Vita Vea before he blew up, said Kyler Gordon. Said he looked great. On the DL he said he was really impressed by Taimani, good movement, has moved ahead of Tuli.

As much as we want the other two guys in there...if they aren't ready they aren't ready. -
Linebacker could be very scary if true. No injuries please. A walk on is the highlight of the spring at linebacker?

If he is outplaying the recruits everyone thought would be good, so be it. He has looked great in limited minutes. A strong walkon culture never hurts...it's a net positive all around. The coaches arent going to start a walkon for shits and giggles. That player earned the time.jecornel said:Linebacker could be very scary if true. No injuries please. I don't mind listening to Dick evaluate (recruiting specialist once upon a time)... I do wonder though what they were asking Olefoshio, Sirmon, Tafisi and crew to accomplish in spring. It wouldn't surprise me if the coaches were pushing Sirmon's and Tafisi's boundaries while just letting Olefoshio play so-to-speak.
Olefoshio's story is unique and clearly seems to have been under-recruited but a RS FR walk-on starting on our? defense just seems highly unlikely -
Dick Baird picked Washington to beat Oklahoma.

Your eyes dont tell u much now do they? Haener getting reps because he's providing an equal amount of ability as Eason to this point. Any expert would tell you that. It's why Pup is telling you that. Disagree about “just letting Ulofoshio play so-to-speak”. Both he and Ngata spent spring rotating between OLB and ILB. That meant two position group meetings, film, etc.tysenallumbaugh said:I don't mind listening to Dick evaluate (recruiting specialist once upon a time)... If anything the coaches were pushing Ulofoshio’s boundaries while Sirmon and Tafisi stayed as a pair at ILB.
Edit: there was a good write up by one of the beat writers (can’t remember which off the top of my head) about Ngata and his spring bouncing back and forth and how much extra work it was for him. Same would apply to Ulofoshio. -
Myles Bryant (and Ryan Bowman to an extent) did exactly that in 2017, so it's certainly not unprecedented. I would guess that all four will rotate pretty frequently in the spot next to Wellington.tysenallumbaugh said:I don't mind listening to Dick evaluate (recruiting specialist once upon a time)... Gatorz, this 'not unprecedented' awarding walkons goes back a lot farther than 2017....which explains about the time you started following husky football dipshit. Lurk a few years, watch the dawgs a few more years, then post a few years later. Then again Race has been around 20years and hasnt watched a game. ILB looks light on experience but deep with talent. My guy right now to start opposite Wellington is Josh Calvert. I previously predicted Ulofoshio as well because I love the fast rising walk on stories, but I'm switching my prediction now. Calvert's not the fastest ILB we have but he moves the best in pass coverage and has those natural instincts that might be the best on the team. Both him and Cam Williams were starting QB's in high school and both have hit the ground running in college showing high football intelligence and instincts early. I don't think that's a coincidence. Defensive players who used to play QB are more often than not, really good defenders. Kam Chancellor was a former QB as well.
But going back to Calvert, when you have our secondary playing as well as they are defending the pass and at the same time you have former safety Wellington and former QB Calvert defending the middle of the field and jumping passing lanes, where the fuck are you going to go with the ball? The middle of the defense has been where teams attack us in the passing game because we've been so good outside at corner. If those inside linebackers can consistently get pass break ups or interceptions combined with a much better pass rush that forces QB's to make mistakes, this defense will be so fucking good.
Then you also got Eddie Ulofoshio, Jackson Sirmon, MJ Tafisi, Daniel Heimuli, Miki Ah You, and Drew Fowler. That's a shit load of talent right there. Most of those guys look like future NFL guys as Freshman. I'm impressed.
With the addition of Fowler, I think that bumps Phonzo Tuputala to OLB which is where I always thought he'd fit best. He's not fast over long distances, but he's got such quick feet which is what makes great pass rushers. He's also big, physical, and strong as fuck coming out of high school. Just seems like playing on the line of scrimmage would be a natural fit for him.
How about Myles Rice? He kinda looks like he knows what he's doing now. We need him to get in that rotation at OLB and make some plays. -

Let me rephrase before you say more dumb stuff. That's why Haener was getting reps over Sirmon and Yankoff: because he outplayed them.puppylove_sugarsteel said:

You insinuated clearly that Haener was the 'backup' because Sirmon and yerkoff' werent good enough. As if to say, follow me I'll keep it simple, that Eason was the starter. No, Haener was the starter going into spring, Eason the backup. And as of the end of spring, not much has changed. I'll concede Bowman but we? rotate DE's/OLB's quite often (Bowman is a pass-rusher, that's it). We? do not rotate off-ball LB's at nearly the same frequency.GreenRiverGatorz said:

The Myles Bryant "walk-on" narrative needs to be blown the fuck up. The guy had a multiple FBS offers. While him emerging was unexpected, he was a FBS athlete out of HS. Per 247, Olefoshio had some FCS offers. -
