The legend of Tom Manke

Tom was a rising star in 1967 who led the DAWGS to a 5-2 start. Article attached.

For 1968 Manke was demoted to 5th string and the job went to Jerry Kaloper who led the DAWGS to a 3-5-2 record.

Among those games was a 7-7 tie against Cal that was my first regular season game at venerable Husky Stadium. The Tyees were cussing out Owens all day and my dad wanted Manke in so I did too.

UW recovers a fumble deep in Cal territory so Owens decides that's the time to bring in Manke cold. Tom fumbles on the first play. A field goal wins. Back to the bench forever. Trust the coaches.

So 69 rolls around and its a disaster. All the QBs suck because Manke went to Eastern. UW wins one game. The spring of 1970 is when another 5th stringer gets his chance in the Spring Game only because of injury. Kid named Sonny. Sixkiller.

Saved Owens job for 4 more years not that Owens had any clue about it.

Long story short - fuck Haener
