The point was made earlier by someone else: there are / were some "never Trump" Rs, and there are / were some "Trump can shit in my mouth and it'll be great" Rs too. But there is a big group, who are career politicians and who by their MO tend to be more strategic. The latter group, arguably at least, distanced themselves from Trump any way they could because, at the time, it appeared that this was all going to be quite scandalous. Now, as I mentioned, Donnie does other things unrelated to Russia that make associating with him politically risky. But there's no denying that if he or his affiliates were going to be rolled for treason with the Russians, well, there's no recovering from that. It would be like Joe Kennedy aligning himself with the isolationists and being perceived (somewhat fairly I might add) as not being hard enough on the Nazi / Jew problem. When it shook out how it shook out, his career was over and he knew it. Which is why he turned his eye immediately to his boys. His chicken was baked. Same thing here.2001400ex said:

I think it's a fair point. I don't think any of us know to a precise degree how much it got in the way. But Trump has mobilized A LOT of political support for his agenda. Hard to write that off and just assume that they couldn't get it done. Congressmen tend to listen to their constituents. -
