Shout out to former Husky rower and rowing coach Steve Todd (quoted at end of video).
CSB / Rant time with whlinder...
In a race in HS on the Potomac we went forward with the race (Varsity 8 only) in poor, windy conditions because it was part of a larger fund raising event. Dual race against another decent team. Both shells capsized and our opponent’s split in half because a dumbass decided to stand up as it was taking on water.
Despite it being a cold March day where a bunch of high schoolers needed “rescuing”, we were all pulled from the water by the launches and returned to the docks WITHOUT THE NEED FOR TV NEWS TO REPORT ON IT. Because it isn’t newsworthy.
It is stupid to suggest rowers wear life jackets. I mean really.
However... a kid I knew growing up (and knew both his older siblings very well) gurgled while coaching a bunch of 7th graders. Happened on the Potomac just south of National Airport in perfect conditions. Fell out of the launch, no life jacket, launch drifted away (no engine kill switch) and drowned.
Also who wears a fucking life jacket row boating? The oars themselves are a flotation device.
Flotation Device Superiority Guy
We used to have to do a row boat swim test in the old 25 meter pool down by Hec Ed (RIP UW swimming). They'd throw a few oars in the water to demonstrate their life saving capability.
