Mark Helfrich spotted in Seattle
ESPN: Sources close to the University of Oregon have confirmed that Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich has met with University of Washington athletic director Scott Woodward to discuss a possible common future. Helfrich, who was able to do in one season what former head coach Chip Kelly could not in 4 years as head coach of the elite program, namely, turn a perennial national title contender that had went to 4 straight BCS Bowl games into an Alamo Bowl contender in only one season at the helm, was spotted later in the day dining with UW football strategists Kim Grenolds and Chris Fetters. Interviewed later, Grenolds, a highly respected Seattle area figure, said:
"Though we were saddened and deeply troubled by the news that Steve Sarkisian has accepted USC's offer, we are excited about the possibility of Mark Helfrich coaching at Washington. Incremental progress has been fantastic under Sarkisian and we expect it to continue under Mark. He achieved 10-2 in his very first season and this bodes well for Husky football going forward."
Helfrich later acknowledged that he would have some big shoes to fill: "Sark is a great guy. I mean he's just terrific. A fantastic person. It's amazing how he turned around their program in such a short time. I'm thrilled to have a chance to work with those kids up there. They're tough dudes."
Helfrich is expected to take Nick Aliotti, Scott Frost and personal assistant/duck expert Cheswick with him to Washington next year.
