Was listening to an interview with Rick Rubin, who was with the Beastie Boys in the early days as a DJ. He said EVERYTHING they did was an inside joke. From song titles, to lyrics, to things they did on stage to what they wore. Paraphrasing: "Everything we did was from some form of an inside joke. We did those things because we found them funny, with no thought beyond communicating with the small initial audience we had."
