Over a decade ago, my not-then wife and I were walking through Stanley Park up in Vancouver with no intention of seeing or buying art. There's a place called "Painters Circle" there, which is a little lawn where artists are licensed to create and sell art to passersby. Tons of easels set up with paintings and prices on them, and one stood out to me from 30 yards away. The painting was by Orhan Coplu, a turkish painter who happened to be the only artist actually there painting as well as selling. His paintings are pallet knife oil paintings that resemble something like thick, textured, boldly colored Far Side comics that aren't funny. Was a lot of money for a poor young guy at the time, but we headed home with the only piece of original art I've ever bought from somebody I don't know. I've since looked to buy a few more for other rooms in the house, but they're impossible to find, and prints go for twice what he sold us our original for. Not your classical art, but really stands out on the wall, and the texture catches a lot of light.
Portraits are not my thing - why not just take a picture (and yeah, ye olden times)?
I'm good with Van Gogh, which is pretty basic of me, but whatever. I like shit that I can start at and not know what it is I'm looking at. Allows me to look like I'm really studying a painting hard. Big fan of my 1 year old's water color paintings for that reason.

I stumbled upon a new favorite Van Gough. Made me think of our resident midget, crab fucker @dflea .

Looks like Van Gogh was up to speed on how delicious a couple crabs for dinner is.

I was fortunate enough to see Chop Suey hanging in the study of the private collector who owned it. Just before it sold for $91M
I don't claim to be an art guy by any stretch of the imagination, but seeing that one got me in the feels.
Just what it seems like, don't twist.
