Voting Day as a holiday

I get the philosophical desire for a voting holiday. But what material impact do you think it would have? Serious question.

I think with the increasing stratification of the economy and the types of jobs the majority of Americans now hold, its way more difficult to get the day off to vote. I do think lots of votes are left on the table by people that have no choice but to work. I dont’t have any data to back that up but I believe it to be anecdotally true. I’m curious if there are ideas out there about allowing more people in that situation to get off work besides a full blown holiday.

So you're proposing not merely a federal holiday, but essentially a mandatory shutdown of private business (essential services exempted I assume)?

No, I’m saying that I see workers being unable to get time off as an issue and I’m asking for ideas. A federal holiday might work as many businessess honor them as well, but then again lots of the businesses that employ the people who have this issue don’t.

If your primary goal to give lower strata of the economy a free-and-clear day to vote, a federal holiday wouldn't go far enough. @IPukeOregonGrellow for example is still pumping gas on July 4.

This is the problem we need to solve, Ducks and Cuogs need to vote too.

Government employees already get time off to vote.
