Can't buy weapons or materials from countries your fighting. HTH
Tariffs are a ham handed way to prop up the military industrial base. HTH
And what would you suggest?
Maybe read the DoD report mentioned in the article that you posted. It lays out a laundry list of recommendations. Most require additional spending. None require tariffs.
Agreed but for how they should be used as a punishment against Chinese theft of our technology. Really dumb move to use them against allies or to prop up segments of the economy.

Leftards and RINOs have ignored chicom intellectual property theft for decades. Why didn't Barry use smart diplomacy and a reset button to convince the chicoms to play nice? No need to answer, rhetorical question.

The manufactures would be more competitive with the tariffs and not require handouts form uncle sugar. It also stimulates production of required strategic materials. Thought maybe you could figure that out. Guess not.
If you think tariffs are the solution to Chinese IP theft then you don't understand the scope of the problem. Most of the high value IP theft is through FDI or espionage. What will tariffs do to crack down on either of these? You really think China is going to stop spying on us if we craft a new trade agreement?

They could crack down on their own companies from selling knock offs from stolen intellectual property. Unfortunately, the government is complacent with it.
Everybody spies on everybody, but it's used more for military and political gain. China is a rarity as they use it in large part for economic gain. This is has been a major problem that has gone largely ignored by the last three presidential administrations. Finally, we have a president that wants to do something about it. If somebody here has a better way to have China cooperate with the enforcement of intellectual property laws I'm all for it. But tariffs seem to be the only weapon we have at our disposal. Any other suggestions?

Is there any way to punish China for this theft without using tariffs?
