It's know your personnel. If you got Mike Landsford or Chuck Nelson kicking that then fine, play it safe. A sketchy Peyton Henry? Do everything you can to make it a chip shot.
Maybe we should just recruit a kicker who can kick?

They can all kick. Problem is only a few can excel under pressure. Hard to simulate that while recruiting. Maybe have them kick on their visit and if they miss you tase them. See who comes through with the prod waiting.
I'll take improving the chances of a made FG over the chances of a fumble.
Cringe.
You think Pete made the right call?
I would have ran the ball one more time to see if Mario was going to start burning his timeouts to not let him ice my guy three times. If not I would have let it run down and kicked it.
That's dangerous territory though. The defense doesn't care about yards anymore at that point and they are just going for the ball.
If the kid makes the field goal then Peterman is a genius, just like Mario would have been the man for getting the first down to put Stanford away, but CJ fumbled and he looked like an asshole.

I have no problem continuing to run when you have the chance to seal the game like CJ had. Shit happens, but it's rare. If the alternative is taking a knee, then it's a retarded move obviously.
Kickers are 2.5x as likely to make a 20-29 yard kick than they are a 30-39 kick, at least this year. It was worth the risk in this case too, imo.

LOL at thinking the icing was a good strategy.
HRYK.
He missed that kick 100% of the time before having extra time to think about it, but only 50% of the time while having extra time to think about it.
Do you watch college football? Most teams have shit kickers. Our problem is that a) Pete didn’t properly account for that when it mattered, and b) good coaches are supposed to figure out how to eventually find a competent PK. 0-2 by the head man, and by season’s end it could have directly cost us two conference titles.

It's a tough loss. Frankly sucks. See you in Montlake quacks.

We should hire away another teams kicking coach

Not a dry eye in the house when he left the game at Cal.
Just what I'm hearing so don't twist.
