That's why everyone loved him when he was hired and won the Sugar Bowl in his first year. The reality was, he was a sub .500 coach at Ball State, and 13-12 at SDSU. So, Michigan got a sub.500 coach, but he was considered a great hire because he was a "Michigan" man. It was a terrible hire. The guy has not shown anything to prove he is any better than average.
It's a classic example of why I hate the 'let's hire a guy who bleeds purple and gold/maize and blue' approach embraced by idiots everywhere. Alumni are a great idea if they're proven winners. If they're not, it's useless.
Michigan should have offered Harbaugh a stupid amount of money (I heard they lowballed him at the time, hoping for the hometown discount) and not taken no for an answer.
