We very much love Mike in Syracuse. He's family here. We fully expected him to be here for 30 years, just like Coach B. And I can say without hesitation that Mike will NEVER be coming back to Syracuse. Not that he isn't welcome....not at all.bananasnblondes said:
Yeah, Syracuse is gonna come after him hard after they move Boeheim's corpse out of the building. You have to think Cohen vetted him pretty hard about staying at UW. He was a pretty left-field hire.phineas said:Hope Jenn is gonna be able to pay Hopkins when someone else is ready to poach him
This bird has left the nest. Mike is now out to make his own name in College Basketball.
In time, you Husky fans will come to realize (as we did) just how special of a coach you have in Mike Hopkins. We are so very sorry to have lost him. But we are so very happy that he landed in a good place. -

He gone -
I'm glad to see another SU fan here. Mike is family and I love how well he's doing in his first year. It would be great if the Huskies could make a run in the tournament and make this season REAL interesting. I hope at least UW can get to the tournament and ruin the days of higher-ranked teams but think the Huskies can finish strong, especially if they can beat Oregon, and get into the rankings with a good seed. The team is rolling, the home crowd is making a lot of noise, and the coaches are in a good groove. Hopkins has been in the tournament enough to keep the kids centered and win a few...if not more. Can't wait for the next game...44PRIDE said:

I don't understand that perspective at all. Plenty of coaches have gone out to make their own name but eventually returned to their alma mater. Roy Williams a notable example that comes to mind.44PRIDE said:

Hopkins is only 47. He has plenty of time to establish his program at UW and still return to Syracuse sometime in the next 5-10 years if the timing is right when Boeheim retires or the successor is fired. Syracuse is a special place for Hop and he would have to consider any opportunity there. -
A guy passed up god knows how many chances to be a headcoach over 25 years based on how much he loved the program and the area, but if it became available he'd stay in Seattle?44PRIDE said:

That's basinine -
If you’re worried about Hopkins going back to Syracuse, you’re a doog. Boeheim isn’t leaving until his son is gone anyways.
If Hopkins wins at UW, other schools than Syracuse will want him. That’s the way it works. -
I'm telling y'all how the guy is wired. I've known Mike and have had the chance to speak with him. Our kids played ball together at local camps. Mike isn't a job-hopper. If he buys into a program and an area, he's as faithful as they come.
Mike had his dream job in hand. The chance to carry on his mentors legacy at his Alma Mater. But Washington presented him the opportunity to do something unique. He sees this as his chance to follow his mentors path and build a program from scratch....in his hometown
To him, Washington isn't a steppingstone....its home. Mike plans on delivering you a National Championship. -
I was about to say, our only saving Grace is that his wife? is from the area and he genuinely likes Seattle.44PRIDE said:I'm telling y'all how the guy is wired. Taking a full page add out to thank the fans was some Nebraska classy shit.
I love Hop, he's a complete psycho. He's like an unabrasive Harbaugh. -
You can be 100% right as to his psychological makeup but that still doesn't rule out Hop returning to Syracuse if the situation is right.44PRIDE said:I'm telling y'all how the guy is wired. There is certainly plenty of room for speculation as to his eventual return to Syracuse. There are a lot of factors at play and things change over time. However, Mike has young kids and wants stability for them, his parents are older and on the west coast, he spent decades in one place and likes it that way, and calls Seattle home...from his youth.
UW is in the big leagues and can afford to pay him well if he's successful. And Seattle is a destination. Syracuse is a great place in many ways but it has a sparse economy and is under snow 6 months of the year. Upstate New York has wonderful lakes and mountains, but Seattle is currently far more dynamic and is in a beautiful setting itself.
I don't think Hopkins feels he left SU on great terms, with many fans openly questioning him as a viable choice for head coach and changes in administration making him feel like his position wasn't as certain as once thought. Boeheim and he are close friends and he knew Boeheim wanted to coach 5 years or more longer. Why stay when a great option presented itself?
Even if he wants to go back to Syracuse, it will be at least 5 years and the administration that was close to him is already gone, with other changes in administration probable by the time Boeheim leaves. I think somewhere closer to LA is a bigger risk for hiring him away but think there's an even chance that UW could be home for Hopkins until he retires. I think he should have success recruiting to UW and that's one key to building a program.
In order for anyone to care, he has to be successful. He's off to a good start and I think he can build a great program at UW, but it's still just his first year. I'm hoping his success makes a good and enduring story...no matter how his career plays out. -
I hope he gives up the battle of hair loss and ditches the hair sooner rather than later
-
I dealt with that battle a few years back. The difference between a balding guy that keeps his hair super short and a balding guy trying to keep the hair grown out is mind blowing.phineas said:I hope he gives up the battle of hair loss and ditches the hair sooner rather than later

This guy is a Syracuse basketball half brain. Edit: This is not an insult. Half brain is a term of endearment on this site.Shenexon said:There is certainly plenty of room for speculation as to his eventual return to Syracuse. I think he’s right that USC and UCLA are just as big of threats as Syracuse.
At this point, who cares? Let’s enjoy winning and being able to have genuine optimism for the future of the program. -
Nothing worse than a horse shoe. You gotta go bald and accessorize. Get a gold chain and a nice watch and you can be a cool bald guy.Rapeculturedawg said:

If Hopkins continues this path then UW won’t let him go. They would do everything possible to keep him.RoadDawg55 said:If you’re worried about Hopkins going back to Syracuse, you’re a doog. Boeheim isn’t leaving until his son is gone anyways.

I know jack and shit about college basketball so forgive my ignorance, but do our Syracuse visitors have any insight as to if Hop has NBA aspirations?
-
None at all that I know of. He was a coach with the Olympic team a couple of times and knows a lot of the players, but think he's a college coach at heart. His intensity and passion seem geared for college kids so I think the NBA is a distant option.Doog_de_Jour said:I know jack and shit about college basketball so forgive my ignorance, but do our Syracuse visitors have any insight as to if Hop has NBA aspirations?

Tend to agree with Shenexon. Hop likes the college game. He enjoys coaching and recruiting college players. All those recruiting relationships he's cultivated over 20 years would instantly go out the window. Additionally, the 2-3 zone doesn't translate well to the NBA game. He may eventually get offers. But I'd be shocked if he made the jump.
As a side note, Boeheim had offers from NBA teams in the late 80's, early 90's (NJ Nets and someone else)....but never made the jump.
