We are doing a really good job at getting very good players at (almost) every position. The floor for our classes at this point is extremely high, these are really fucking good classes.
But if we want to actually compete for nattys we need to start getting some really elite players, and Malloe is really the only coach who has shown the ability to do that. (Lake obviously great too, but he's different) -
*whoseDennis_DeYoung said:The amount of things that would have to go correctly for us to land a REAL class next year are basically the amount of things that have gone well in the entire Pete era + 20%.
Pete just isn't really serious about recruiting. It's pretty much that simple. If he were, there's no way Boner, Greggy, Paopao and Lubick would be anywhere near a job after early signing day.
I've been paying really close attention to the top 2 teams in every conference. We aren't close guys.
The issue is that we just don't take it that seriously. So, like this year - EVERY position needs to look like what our DBs look like at the minimum. That's a typical top 10 class.
We think that's ASTOUNDING - but really it's just average for top 10 teams.
We really need to change our expectations from 'good for a second tier P12 team' to a Top 10 in the country team.
For all teams in the top 10 we are by far recruiting the worst (outside of UCF).
Again, we have been the best overall program in the Pac for the last 3 years and we can't score a top 5 WR on the coast. One of whom's brother is on our team.
The thing is - the space between where we are (which is pretty good) and where we are going to need to be to seriously contend, we are stile miles and miles away.
If we close with Ford/Bru, Wright, Latu, Heimuli, Henry and McDuffie - then we are getting there.
Let's look at the top 20 teams in 247's composite ratings...
When you look at the amount of top 300 players (over .90 rating, basically) in all classes (and USC) you can see where things are for us:
Bammer: 20
Texas: 13
UGA: 12
Fla. State: 11
Notre Dame: 11
TAMU: 11
Clemson: 10
LSU: 10
Ohio State: 10
Oregon: 10
Oklahoma: 9
Penn State: 9
Auburn: 8
Michigan: 8
Florida: 7
Tennessee: 7
Mississippi State: 6
Stanford: 6
USC: 6
Miami: 5
Arkansas: 4
Ole Miss: 4
South Carolina: 4
Washington: 4
So, basically we'd be tied for 9th in the SEC in terms of elite players.
ACC - Tied for 4th
Big XII - 3rd
Big 10 - 4th
Pac 10 - 4th
So, that's the reality of our top end talent. I'd like to see this number be 8 for us next year. And it's easily possible.
Smalls
Flowe
Ricks
Ringo
Wilson
Bijan
Jay Butterfield
Clark Phillips
Gee Scott (lulz)
Gary Bryant
Jalen McMillan
Ngata
Botelho
Hatchett
DJ Rogers
Matt Sykes
Joran Banks
etc -

Yeah, Chris Steele is probably a better prospect and is ranked higher. Wright and him are essentially at the same point.
I don't understand rankings for recruits, frankly. I think you can kind of separate them into tiers, but that's about it. Either way, McDuffie is not an ELITE player (there aren't any elite CBs on the WC this year), but he's damn good. Pretty impressive bit of recruiting by Jimmy Lake.

That’s it. Latu, Paama the rest of the DBs and all of the OL are a small step below. If we somehow get Ford he’s there.
I think Spam is close. I think Heimuli is. -
What kind of brand do you need to recruit in-state OL? How in the hell can we not get Hatchett when Locker is coaching there and Pete is winning? What kind of kid grows up here dreaming of playing at fucking Oklahoma?Dennis_DeYoung said:
Exactly. I think there are like 10 guys next year we are in on who are elite. But honestly, I don't have much hope.HillsboroDuck said:

Our recruiting has a long ways to go. We are doing better than ever, but if we want to be a top 5 team our classes have to be consistently top 10.
Next year we have a real shot, but we will probably find a way to cock it up.
Smalls could be the best recruit UW's ever signed.
And 2021 could be as good or better at the top.
Or we could whiff on them all not named Huard.

QB: Bryce Young we are still recruiting, but we got blown out for him even though they will have a new coach and they have a new OC.
RB: We didn't even make Kendall Milton's top 10; Bijan Robinson is elite and likes us, but I don't see any way we get him.
WR: Johnny Wilson is elite. I don't think we will get him.
OL: Hatchett is elite - Coker thinks he's going to Oklahoma. I think we have a good shot, but we shall see. Myles Murao is pretty fucking elite. Maybe?
OLB: Smalls obviously, but I'm not optimistic. Pete Latu is elite, but I don't think he has the grades, sadly.
LB: Justin Flowe - lol no. Botelho is up there.
DB: Ringo, Ricks.
Out of all these guys I don't see any obvious wins. Murao is probably closest, but you always have to assume anyone good at MD is going to USC.
Smalls and Ringo are possible, but Ringo's mom is probably going to bone us. Smalls is a hard call. I still don't think we have the 'brand' that attracts these kinds of players. That's why we can't seem to get the Fozzies, etc. -

We've been to 3 NY6 games in a row. What has PSU won that we haven't? Has Oregon done something special on the field to merit how they are recruiting? Everyone always has excuses.
Before you say 'oh, but Oregon blah blah blah'
If we get Charbonnet, Ngata, Heimuli, McDuffie, Latu, Wright in this class, then we are right where we need to be. That would be a class I feel is just as good as anyone's. So, if we have real recruiters at RB, TE and WR - we are basically there: THIS YEAR. -

Going by the 247 ratings, we have 11 guys in this class at 90 or above. The composite rankings drop 6 of our players above .892 but below .90, barely missing that cutoff.Dennis_DeYoung said:The amount of things that would have to go correctly for us to land a REAL class next year are basically the amount of things that have gone well in the entire Pete era + 20%.

Going by average rating, we are at .90 (247 rankings) if you take out the kicker, which is the 10th highest average in the country. That's higher than teams like Texas A&M, Clemson, LSU, Texas, Michigan, and Florida. -
