TSiO DDY Breakdown 2018 Early Signees: Defense (Lineman/BUCK)

We're about to pod - we wanted to provide you with our “OFFICIAL DDY RATINGS” for the Early 2018 Signees. Comments welcome (and may get you a shoutout) but dissent will not be tolerated!

Draco Bynum (6’4 258 DL) https://www.hudl.com/video/3/4452336/59c469f9b018b0144c2a8385 (Few games from Senior Year)

Coker: Draco has arms that look like they go on forever, and he already uses that gift to his advantage. He will be a guy that bulks up 35 pounds before his RS-Frosh season. He reminds me a lot of Greg Gaines in that he has a way for blowing up the play, but also finishing the tackle. I think his ceiling is immense, he has that raw country strength for a guy that is only playing at 250 pounds right now. He could lineup at 0-5 tech on our DL and do well at all of them. DDY2

Dennis: Almost the perfect WTE prospect. He is so powerful in his arms with lock-outs and moving from lock-out past blockers quickly. Moves side-to-side well, but is more a ‘straight line’ player at this point. Has a huge frame, though and you could see him easily ending up around 300 pounds and being a physical force. If he develops his lower body and can draw power from it, he will club the living shit out of people. DDY2

Mosiah Nasili-Liu (6’2 281 DL) https://hudl.com/video/3/8280393/59fe0daab018752520ab22d4

Coker: If there is ever a path for a UW DT to end up a good player, Liu is on that path… PLAY RB IN HS! So this means he will likely become an all-conference player for us. My worry with Liu is that he was going to come in and be 6’0 tall, but once I saw he was over 6’1 I was very happy. He is very athletic for his size and extremely explosive in his first two steps. I see him as a guy that comes in on third downs and pass situations and becomes a difficult block for interior OL. DDY2

Dennis: He has a chance to be a guy who is special. You see his quick-twitch abilities in his running back (Vea? Gaines?) film - he moves a big frame fast through space with a lot of power. That’s exactly what you want. Why wasn’t he recruited by everyone? Well, he played this year probably closer to 260 and doesn’t do a lot of side-to-side football ‘stuff’ yet. But he has a high motor and a lot of power - can he learn to cut down angles and stop people? DDY2

Sam Taimani (6’1.5” 320 DL) https://hudl.com/video/3/4055303/59bff87715f6200d68c79df0 (Single game, Sr. year)

Coker: Again, another rare athlete (no full senior film yet). Unreal initial explosion, I love him as a guard, but his size is perfect for our defense. His explosive first two steps combined with his raw strength (dat ass) and natural leverage will make him an absolute terror for opposing offenses. Getting a kid out of East HS is a big deal also. Too bad The Continent is graduating, because Taimani would eat him up. DDY2

Dennis: Taki has a wide stance (like Larry Craig) and plays really low. He’s got so much power and flexibility, you see his ability to dominate people once he gets all his power movements together. He’s still raw in terms of technique, but not many people are naturally as powerful as he is. Can be big time. DDY2

Zion Tupuola-Fetui (6’2 250 BUCK) https://hudl.com/video/3/5387298/5a38162cb019420f14231f5b (Single game, Sr. year)

Coker: I could eventually see Zion going inside as a DT, I think he has the body to get to 285. But for now he is a BUCK. He has very long arms and is pretty quick off the line. He has limited senior highlights for now so he is the toughest to judge currently. He moves really well in space when he is chasing down plays, that’s where you can really see his athletic ability and that is what intrigues me about him. With proper motivation and when playing really hard I think he could be a player. DDY2

Dennis: Gigantic frame, he looks a lot like another player in this class (Draco Bynum) from a movement and quickness perspective, but is more raw. This guy is a project with elite size/movement combination and has a high football IQ. I want to see him move inside where his combo will make him like Jaylen Johnson. If he stays outside, he will look more like Benning that any of us would like. DDY2

If Zion does not end up at BUCK (which DDY prefers), then who is the BUCK in this class? Admittedly, I like the explosiveness and closing speed of both Tafisi and Kaho. Both will have success rushing the passer, no matter which LB position they play.

I secretly love shorter squatty DTs who can get under a guards pads and drive them back. Especially when they have a huge ass like Taimani. Or if they're quick and still have decently long arms like Lucy-Liu.

When they're short like that AND plays with good forward lean they always win the leverage battle and it can be a joy to watch, especially if they can use their hands and feet in unison. And it looks like Malloe can actually get them there.

Way too much discussion about teen boy ass in this thread.

Agreed. My ideal is Mike Patterson. Watched a ton of those early Carroll SC teams at the Coliseum. Patterson wrecked shop getting leverage and being quick. Gaines is a poor man’s which if Liu or ST can develop into that????

We had a Mike Patterson in the '95 class.

Draco reminds me A LOT of Levi in their movements coming out of HS ...

    I think Levi's ceiling is tremendous ...

I likewise think Draco has an insane ceiling as well.

Levi’s first step is pretty special. Draco has nice quickness, but not that level

Drago looks better than I remember from back when he committed. He's way quicker and more explosive. Hes an inside pass rush specialist at a minimum.

    DDY 3. Fuck off.

    I'd agree with that

Levi's a future 1st round pick in my eyes ... he has all the tools you want in today's DL in terms of speed/power combination

Draco may be 85% or so of Levi ... but 85% of Levi is also a future 1st team all conference DL

Fucking this. When I look at this DL class, I see a bunch of guys with potential to wreck shop on the inside, but we need some fucking edge rushers in the worst way. Fuck Psalm with Baric Dondarrion’s flaming sword, but our edge depth makes me miss him. I just threw up in my mouth.

In a strange way, looking at Bartlett, Potoae and Bowman reminds of the days when Chris Jurgens and Todd Elstrom were our best WRs.

Not knocking any of those guys, but it's just not the level we need.

I also see some of the same things that others (I think NorwegianHusky) mentioned re Martin on another thread. He seems to come in straight up (little bend), and without an incredibly explosive first step. I'd be interested in others' thoughts.

Bartlett has been very productive, but not consistent. I think he’s going to crank up the consistency in 18. It’ll be pretty amazing to see a 4th year senior ball out.

Agree that we still need an edge rusher.
