Washington coach Chris Petersen remains optimistic that senior outside linebacker Joe Mathis will return from a foot injury at some point this season.
Mathis, UW’s sack leader, missed Saturday’s game against Oregon State. Petersen did not give a timeline for Mathis’ potential return.
Last week, the Huskies initially feared Mathis’ foot injury would end his season, but he’s progressed enough that he’s now considered “week to week,” according to sources.
In Mathis’ place, junior Connor O’Brien started at Buck linebacker and had the Huskies’ only sack in Saturday’s 41-17 victory over the Beavers. Most Read Stories
Redshirt freshman Benning Potoa’e (three tackles, one tackle for loss) also played more snaps with Mathis out.
“(O’Brien) did a great job. He really did,” Petersen said. “We were really pleased with him and he’s been coming on. He’s been getting in there and he’s been getting significant playing time and certainly he got much more.
“It was good also to see Benning get in there. He did a nice job as well. We’re proud of both of those guys in terms of how they kind of answered.”
Watching this does not make me optimistic. I think Sample is done.
His reaction at 4:33 when Fatters asks a question about Colorado... LOL you can tell he hates Doogman with a fire of a thousand suns but has to have restraint.

I love him. Like @RaceBannon pointed out, we have battered wife syndrome from 15 years of abuse. I want to believe.
