Callahan cheated and put a true Frosh Dutchman in the stroke seat of the Varsity 8after the Cal Dual (UW lost earlier in the season to Cal on rough water). Crew, being the most old timey of college sports is the last vestige of freshman competing only in all frosh squads. In all seriousness, don't think there is a rule against putting a true frosh in the varsity but it's highly unusual.
That's a good question. I was just kidding, of course, about the "cheating" part. I don't know what the rules were technically regarding frosh rowing on varsity; I always through it was more a matter of tradition and precedent as opposed to specific rules.
