Anyone that hires and keeps Sean Miller isn't serious.
I was talking about this yesterday. Arizona is no longer elite. They haven't won a championship in 20 years and haven't been to a Final Four in 16 years. They have a guy that recruits off of the success a legend built and is a mediocre bench coach.
They will toil in the middle forever with Miller. Very Good is the enemy of Great.

Arizona is a top 10 program. This natty or bust shit on this board gets annoying.
You have a coach that recruits well and gets you to the sweet 16 or better every year. You just won a conference title over Oregon. Who did you root for in that game btw?
Exactly ... it's hard to get deep into the tournament ... all it takes is one off day and you're out.
It's why to me the real accurate measure of a coach is how he performs in conference ... and Self is amazing in that regard. Kansas isn't always the most talented team in the conference ... but they always seem to get the most out of their talent.
If I was a Kansas supporter, I don't think I'd ever advocate firing Self ... but at the same time, it's got to sting to come up short so many times.

This is akin to the high school nerd fucking the prom queen 14 straight years and not fucking miss America as a side piece.

Almost every team needs some luck in the tournament. Single elimination makes it tough.
I agree that conference performance is the true test of a coach. You find a coach that consistently gets high seeds, brings in talent, and eventually they break through.
If Self ever went on a run where he won two titles in the next five years, he's an all time great.
Self has had a better career than Miller, but the same is true for him.
self will win another title eventually. NCAA and MLB are very similar. it's about giving yourself chances as the tournament is often a crapshoot. you continually make the elite 8 in the NCAA and the playoffs in MLB you will break through.
Much different than other sports where you can make the western conference finals and be 3 players short

During the regular season I root for whoever is home, I don't care about meaningless conference tournaments other than not wanting anyone to get injured, and the odds of them playing in the NCAA's is like zero.

You can't fire Self ...
But at the same time I feel like Kansas is a step behind the elite
Miller will never sniff that. I know you said lesser, but that's like saying Ty Willingham is a lesser Jim Harbaugh.
but 13 straight big 12 regular season titles may be the most remarkable streak in sports.
