Wow @Swaye that is one of the most badass narratives of how a soldier was awarded the CMH that I've read. I liked the use of "overabundance" in describing the onslaught of NVA commies.
Yeah I learned about that dude in an NROTC class at the UW many moons ago. Was one of the most impressive single acts of otherworldy heroism and complete kick assery I had ever heard of. I did some research on it and he actually stabbed an NVA queer to death after the NVA queer shoved a bayonet in his abdomen during the hand to hand fighting bit. After being shot, stabbed and grenaded 37 fucking times. Best part, he just left the knife sticking out of him and dumped the body to go kill more motherfuckers. Plus he's half Injun, which makes it even more kick ass.
Only way this real life story could have been any more badass is if he took some NVA scalps. Guess there wasn't time for that.
Speaking of badass UW fighter pilots (in this case Marines) I didn't realize until recently that Pappy Boyington was awarded the CMH. When I was little kid my two favorite TV shows were Black Sheep Squadron and Dukes of Hazzard (Waylon is the greatest country recording artist of all time BTW). When I first learned Pappy was a Husky I thought that was fucking awesome. Plus the Corsair was the tuffest fighter plane our country ever made.
The Corsair design was led by a UW grad as well. It's a shame my alma mater is now a shell of its former self. I'm with @Swaye, the place has become a complete fucking embarrassment.
No fucking way - our historical university just keeps getting tuffer and tuffer. Thanks for sharing. The athletic department should find an owner of a surviving Corsair and pay him/her to paint it purple and gold and then fly over the stadium during the pre game.
When I attended UW, hard science was a priority. "Bathrooms and body parts" were there but still fringe. I feel lucky to have worked on and studied some of the things I did back then, much of that basic research is bearing fruit today, and I have had an extremely gratifying career that's still very interesting. But when I see how fucked up that place has become it genuinely hurts. So much wasted potential for the sake of political correctness and social justice. Fucking shame of all shames, far worse than the fall the football program took, and quite possibly irrecoverable.
