As long as UW has sucked, going 12-2 is nice, but not a program changer on it's own. Thus, I do not wallow in disappointment from the recruits we don't get. I'm still in the building-upward phase where I'm typically thrilled with the decent recruits we HAVE gotten over the past 3 years.
We've been here before, not in '91, where we think we're closer to a NC than we are. True, we were 2 wins away this year, but those are 2 fucking HUGE wins, and UW is not possessing the ball late in the 4th, driving toward the winning score. The game was decided well before that because we don't have enough depth at every position. It will come if UW keeps winning 10+ a season, but I think UW is still 1 or 2 years from landing a Fozzy without serious competition from Stanford or USC. So I'm surprised when others are so surprised.
The converse of my prior post is that Stanford, for example, gets the "1 down year" pass, as it takes either a much worse season, such as Oregon's, or two or three seasons of not meeting expectations to convince recruits of a downward trend. I think Stanford will be decent, but not as good as they have been recently, over the next couple years. But I wouldn't expect to sell that to a recruit this year.
Another 40 point beat-down of Stanford next year? Now we're seriously in the recruiting game.
