Was reminded of this from a Jude tweet today, but looks like we have we have 8 total 4 Star (per Scout) OKG’s redshirting this year: https://mobile.twitter.com/A_Jude/status/796067217179688960

- Murphy

- Gilchrest

- Eifler
- McGrew
- Wattenberg
- Williams

Have we ever post 2000 redshirted this amount of 4 star talent? Seem pretty impressive. And interestingly enough, some of the Frosh that are getting the most time- e.g., Rapp (low rated?), Harris and Fuller – were all 3 start kids.

If we can keep depth I can see 2018 being a good year but I'm very skeptical of 2017 still. I know every hates talking by about the future but IDGAF there is nothing else to talk about right now and these topics need some variety.

2017 is really going to come down to who comes back. If Pettis and Bierria return, I think we're going to be very good. Losing Ross + Pettis and/or Azeem + Bierria would be tough to overcome, and I think Ross and Azeem are long gone.

Good teams with good players have that problem. It is a problem still, but a good one to have.

None of those guys played the same position though. If all it is is losing Qualls, Azeem, both corners and Budda (and even Ross) I think we can still be damn good. But there comes a poont where no staff can replace that much talent that fast and remain in the top 10.

We'll be ranked and good no matter what thanks to Browning, Gaskin and the OL. But we'll need a couple of these other guys to come back if we're going to be anything like this year.

A program does eventually reach a plateau where the incoming and outgoing talent and coaching equalize and any given year may be an up or a down. While I think our big problem right now for this immediate moment is depth, I am not overly concerned about who will be coached up for next year. Yeah, sure, maybe we lose Victor and Bierria and we aren't able to replace them next year. That is definitely conceivable. I don't think that is a given we take a huge step back as a team though though. They are special, undoubtedly, but if this staff can develop talent the way we think it can then we'll have fine players replacing them and the rest of the surrounding cast may be the best players. I have no concern about corners for next year. Gardenhire would start for pretty much any other team in the country right now.

Does anyone recall off hand the most early departures we've ever had for the NFL draft in a particular year? Not counting the seniors, we keep hearing about the possibility of losing 1 WR, 2 LB's, 1 DT, 1 safety, and 1 CB, so 6 kids altogether. Who knows how it all plays out, but that seems like an insane number of guys to be wondering about who's coming back or not.

That would be way more than I ever remember.

It's a crazy talented junior class though.

Well, it's interesting to look at what's happened in every class before...

One caveat, even though Taylor Rapp and Amandre Williams SHOULD'VE been 4-stars (Rapp should've been a 5 IM&COs), they were 3-star kids.

    2015: Signed 8, redshirted 3.
Cobra, Gaskin, McClutchins, Renfro, Adams, Roberts*, Potatoe*, Joyner* (due to injury)

    2014: Signed 4, redshirted 2.
    Buttah, Hale, KCJS*, Frankenstein McGary*

    2013: Signed 8, redshirted 4.
Black Power*, Coleman*, String, Ross, Daniels, Qualls*, Mathis, J.Kelly*

    2012: Signed 4, redshirted 2.
Miley Cyrus*, Ragnar Lunderqvisst*, Mickens, Shaq

    2011: Signed 5 (well, 2 were 5-stars), redshirted 1
    Kasen, ASJ, Bishop, Tupou*, Sample

2010: Signed 9, redshirted 3 (Holt said that Sione would leave in 3 if they didn't screw him up!)
Montana*, Kev Smith, Kohler, Porter, Hatchie*, Sione, Shirley* (doesn't really count because he showed up late), Chris Young (didn't make it), Sean Parker.

(This is the year I spent all fall arguing with Doogs that it was dumb to play so many of these guys; they argued back they would all be gone in 3 years, 'don't redshirt them for the Cleveland Browns!!!!'; If you think Kohler's shoulder issues were inevitable, you probably believe Sark only yelled fight the fuck on because of mixing pills and booze).

    2009: None.

    2008: Signed 8 (one 5-star), redshirted 2.
Polk* (redshirted because of injury like Joyner), Kearse, Bruns (lol), Kavario, Kelemete*, Noble (health issues; left), Ta'amu, Everrette Thompson

    2007: Signed 4, redshirted 2
Bull Johnson, Boyles* (delayed enrollment, then redshirted), Izbicki* (lol), Vonzell

2006: Signed 5 (one never enrolled), redshirted 4
JACK LOCKNER!!*, Marcel Reece (was a JC, though), De'Shon Matthews*, Elisara*, Ashlee Palmer (played at MISS)

    2005: Signed 2, redshirted 2.
    Hasty* & Savannah*!!!

2004: Signed 3, 2 didn't enroll, the other was a JC; no redshirts
    Matt Tui, Keauntea, Dashon

    2003: Signed 6? (2 JCs and 1 kicker), redshirted 3
Carl Bonnell* (bounceback from WSU), Craig Chambers*, Jon Lyon (5-star!!), Mike Mapu*, Tahj Bomar, Braunstein

    2002: Signed 7 (1 never came), redshirted 6
Stanback*, Kenny James*, Nathan Rhodes (never came), Wrecking Machine Mateaki*, Stan Daniels*, Brandon Ala*, Scott White*

2001: Signed 10ish (hard to exactly say), redshirted 8
Casey Paus*, Chris Singleton*, Ty Eriks*, E.T., Reggie, Joe Toledo*, Francisco Tipoti*, Rob Meadow*, Mike Savicky*, Tui Aleilefaleula*, Eric Shyne*

So, basically, you have to go back to 2001.

This year, I would expect we will see a bunch of our players play: Ty Jones, maybe Bynum and Cook, Bryant, doubt it on Marlon, Ngata and the DBs, though.

Lol Mateki (Donny) is my trainer haha

FUCK. The plus side is this makes you think that maybe with Mathis for sure being gone and Potato coming on slowly, they think he is an upgrade. I was shocked he was going to redshirt.

Now is the time to win. If he can contribute the rest of the way it's worth it. Potentially 6 more games left on the year.
