I always liked Stockdale. Completely out of his element, but a good guy. He came to speak to one of my classes at Cal, and he spent a fair amount of time just recounting his Vietnam experiences. Turns out he was an air squadron commander on the carrier Ticonderoga the night that the Maddox said it was attacked but really wasn't, and he spent the night in the air over the Gulf of Tonkin looking for Vietnamese torpedo boats that weren't there.
