Doogs here think that any old coach can win if they inherit the right situation and/or just have the right players.

It's hard, as evidenced by the last 20 years of USC football:

    1996 John Robinson 6–6 3–5 T-5th
    1997 John Robinson 6–5 4–4 T-5th
    1998 Paul Hackett 8–5 5–3 T-3rd
    1999 Paul Hackett 6–6 3–5 T-6th
    2000 Paul Hackett 5–7 2–6 T-8th
    2001 Pete Carroll 6–6 5–3 5th
    2002 Pete Carroll 11–2 7–1 T-1st
    2003 Pete Carroll 12–1 7–1 1st
    2004 Pete Carroll 11–0* 8–0* 1st
    2005 Pete Carroll 0–0* 0–0* 1st
    2006 Pete Carroll 11–2 7–2 T-1st
    2007 Pete Carroll 11–2 7–2 T-1st
    2008 Pete Carroll 12–1 8–1 1st
    2009 Pete Carroll 9–4 5–4 T-5th
    2010 Lane Kiffin 8–5 5–4 T-3rd
    2011 Lane Kiffin 10–2 7–2 1st (South)
    2012 Lane Kiffin 7–6 5–4 T-2nd (South)
    2013 Lane Kiffin
    Ed Orgeron
    Clay Helton 10–4 6–3 T-2nd (South)
    2014 Steve Sarkisian 9–4 6–3 T-2nd (South)
    2015 Steve Sarkisian
    Clay Helton 8–6 6–3 T-1st (South)

So you're saying year 3 matters?
