That's possible, but IMO, Hillary and Trump (or Cruz) will energize both opposing bases. This is one crazy election cycle.

With Trump as the (assumed) nominee no way they stay home. This is the one rep. candidate that will make dem's who were on the fence in terms of voting for President go out and vote.

I would argue it's the republicans who won't vote for Trump as polls show 30% of them will not support him.

That's why in the approx. 30 national polls that have been done in the last 3 weeks, Hillary is ahead of them in all, many by double digits.

Hillary's negatives are off the chart, but compared to "The Donald's" her's look like a tea party.

Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio were way ahead of Trump too. He was viewed as a joke candidate. Then came the headshots..."Low Energy Jeb", "Little Marco" etc.
