What you never hear about when slavery is discussed, is that slaves were sold to Europeans and Arabs (who had far more slaves) by other Africans. When one tribe would conquer another, the losing tribe would be sold into slavery, or kept as slaves by the victor. Slaves probably considered themselves fairly lucky that they weren't just killed outright.
So, technically speaking, a lot of African Americans would have never existed if it wasn't for slavery, because their ancestors would've gotten slaughtered instead.
You never hear Africans in Africa apologizing for winning wars and causing the losers to be shipped off on a boat. -
