Thoughts and grades on the 1st quarter of the season

Offense: Our new offense is a hot mess. On the one hand, how can you argue with over 600 yards per game, and 128 points scored so far? On the other hand, we are the most penalized team in America and most of those have come on the offense. In addition there have been fumbles, one terrible pick, and other random acts of sloppiness. Our saving grace? We are #3 in the nation in 3rd down conversions. We are converting on 3rd down 2 out 3 times. We get ourselves in a hole by being sloppy, then we explode out of the hole due to our talent. Our backs and receivers are ridiculously good. The O-line is playing great. (some of you finally need to admit that the O-line is not a problem) Other than the first pass of the year, Price is playing well. Sark is keeping it balanced. I liked how we were able to keep the ball and run out the clock against Boise and Illinois. The sloppiness is worrisome, but so far it is not affecting our production. Can they keep it up? Or better yet, clean it up? Grade: A-

Defense:Wilcox is a hero. 30 points given up in three games, and Boise and Illinois are good offensive teams. We look fast, physical, and confident. The schemes are creative and aggressive. Other than three blown coverages against Illinois the D has been darn near perfect. Grade: A-

Special Teams:No big plays against us. We have blocked a FG and a punt. No missed PATs or FGs. Coverage has been good. Many kick offs for touchbacks. We get marked down for our return game. Ross’ fumble against ISU was scary. Too many bad decisions on kicks hitting the ground, not enough return yards. Grade: B

Overall:We should be 3-0, and we are. Still think Boise and Illinois were quality wins. Football is about athletic talent, and precise execution. We are getting by on our talent. Sark needs to tighten up the execution. But, so far, so good.
