Tyrion is generally regarded as one of the 'Big 3' main characters, along with Jon and Dany. If we went strictly by the number of POV chapters in the books, Tyrion is number 1, trailed slightly by Jon. Those 2 have significantly more chapters than the 3rd place character, which is Arya, not Dany. However, Tyrion's number of chapters is inflated by the second book, where he had 15 POV chapters, compared to Jon's 8. In the other 3 books those two characters appear in, Jon has more chapters in 2 of them(the last 2) and is tied in the other one(the first book). If I had to rank the characters in terms of importance, I would go:
1A - Jon 1B - Dany 3 - Tyrion 4 - Bran 5 - Arya
These are the 5 main characters George stated he would follow in his original outline for the series. A lot has changed since then, with Sansa becoming sort of a 6th main character.

Hodor, Hot Pie and Grey Worm are the key to everything.
