He might have a point to an extent, but referring to Trump supporters this way, will only make them unify even stronger. If Trump doesn't take advantage of this at the debate, it would be shocking.

He's too smart for himself.
This statement is obviously meant to make people feel stupid for supporting Trump. And he is clearly trying to align for when Rubio is gone.
But he basically called a plurality of people stupid.
I think Cruz will beat Trump one on one ... but Cruz's problem is he is too smart for himself and that may end up being what finishes him off.
He is going to come off as a professor and the smartest guy in the room tonight ... and that is not the posture he needs to strike.
When he explains it the way he does, it's more insulting, because it comes off as snobbish and condescending.
