Comparing every unlikely to come to UW recruit to Shaq Thompson.
"Yeah, but nobody thought we'd get Shaq Thompson either"
"Where was UW with Shaq Thompson at this point of his Senior year?"
etc.
First of all, UW was one of Shaq's two finalists before he committed to Cal. He was a longshot because he was a lock to Cal, not because he wasn't very interested in UW. He always spoke very highly of UW.
Two, in order to get him we had to give the coach recruiting him half a million dollars. Sure, any recruit might be somewhat in play if we're willing to hire away the coach he loves most, but that's the exception, not the rule, and Shaq didn't come just for Tosh he came for Tosh, Wilcox AND because he already really liked UW (abundance!).
It's okay to read the tea leaves and say "doesn't look like UW's going to get recruit x".
And yes, I know, take this to the teenage boy stocking bored where it belongs.
