How rampant was -is- the practice of paying players? "There were teams spending hundreds of thousands of dollars and winning 3 games, Norm Hitzes, a long time Dallas sports radio DJ said. "now that's a definition of a loser"
Steve Endicott an assistant coach at SMU from 1976-1981 had this to say about recruiting defense tackle Mark Lewis, "We were not going to get mark lewis he was going to go to A&M" Endicott said. "We met with Mark and show him $20,000 and he sat there for about thirty seconds and he looked at me and said, "coach that's not even close."
The bottom line? "if you're going to say anything about SMU," said radioman Hitzes "at least they bought players who could pay"
