At some point you have to do better than 7-5 or 6-6

A couple things... I am not sure it's been instinct...Passion said:When it comes to closing strong on highly touted recruits that are waffling, we've never had the killer instinct.
Frustrating.
1. I think we have never been a 'sexy school' to go to, and closing is about stirring the loins primarily. At this point in the game, the thinking with the heart is gone... thinking with the dick time is here. Closing is about being sexy.
2. The best close we?'ve ever had was 2012 when we closed Shaq and Jaydon (motherofgod.png). We got those kids and missed on Arik Armstead and basically everyone else... but we closed because we? destroyed the appeal of Cal and had some additional attractiveness of our own... but also, I think Tosh is a pretty decent closer (though we didn't close amazingly in 2013).
Our best 'close' since I've been paying attention has been in either 2001 when we were a sexy school or in 2014 where we scored Budda, KJCS, Kaleb McGary, Sidney Jones, Brayden Lenius and lil Nate Dogg on the lead up to signing day. We got them all from under the noses of other schools as well.
However, that was getting kids who were at home or against Arizona (Hale), Utah (Jones), a late offer from Miami (Lenius) or no real other concrete offers (KJCS).
Going up against Michigan, Alabama and the LA schools for Cali kids is always going to be difficult and if we close on any of these kids, that would be fucking big boy recruiting. -
Should have said it in the first place then and saved all this bandwidth wasted on teen boys who know we suckbananasnblondes said:

It's good to see people point out the times that I'm right (insert $75k wink)CokeGreaterThanPepsi said:The 2014 close was the best I can remember.
Getting Levi would be a big fucking deal, don't discount that. It would basically make one of our first podcasts absolutely a running joke since we said basically don't recruit texas ever (Tequilla stood strong and might make out on that podcast though). -

Worst recruiting win EVAR.FremontTroll said:USC ran out of room for Jaydon and Vatuvei IIRC.
Shaq was the only big fish we closed on that year and as you point out that was a fortuitous set of circumstances and timing.
We also lost Jordan Payton, missed on flipping half the kids that went to UCLA, and almost lost Cyler to USC. -
Oh and I forgot we kept Beavers commitment secret so he could make a dramatic public splash and give us free pub.Slocus said:
